In recent years, infrared saunas have surged in popularity, thanks to growing interest in wellness practices that combine relaxation with potential health benefits. Unlike traditional saunas, which heat the air to warm the body, infrared saunas use infrared light waves to penetrate the skin and directly raise the body’s core temperature. This lower ambient heat makes the experience more comfortable for many people, while still producing a deep, sweat-inducing effect. The proliferation of infrared saunas has been fueled by their availability in gyms, spas, boutique wellness studios, and even home units, making them accessible to a wider audience seeking convenient ways to enhance physical and mental well-being.
The benefits attributed to infrared sauna use are wide-ranging and supported by emerging research. Users commonly cite improved circulation, muscle relaxation, and pain relief as immediate effects, making them particularly appealing to athletes and those with chronic pain conditions. Regular sessions are also associated with detoxification through sweating, enhanced skin health, stress reduction, and even better sleep quality.
Enter Burbank Infrared Sauna. Since this location was just a few minutes’ walk from my house, I finally gave in to my curiosity and decided to give it a shot. Each sauna is located in a private room, allowing full privacy…especially if you want to enjoy the session in your birthday suit, which is recommended. The sauna itself is fairly compact, fitting a maximum of two people. They say everyone’s sweating experience is different: some may start sweating within 15 minutes, while others may not until the end of the session. I was drenched within the first few minutes. Since it was my first time, I’ll admit it took a lot of willpower to stay in for the full 30 minutes, and I stepped out several times for a quick reprieve. More experienced visitors can crank the heat up to 175 degrees, but the base setting of 155 degrees was more than enough for me.
They claim you can burn up to 600 calories in a session and I believe it. I was sweating from places I didn’t even know could sweat, like the insides of my ears, and I can definitely see how it helps flush out toxins with that amount of perspiration I was dripping. I also noticed how the heat seemed to work its way into my muscles, relieving some minor inflammation. All in all, I’d call it a successful first experience, and I can definitely see myself going back!
