Tucked into the lush rolling hills of South Coast Botanic Garden, Trolls: A Field Study by Thomas Dambo feels like stepping into a whimsical storybook where folklore meets sustainability. Dambo, a world-renowned artist known for building giant trolls out of reclaimed wood, has scattered his larger-than-life creations throughout the garden, inviting visitors to wander and stumble upon these gentle giants as if they’ve always lived among the trees. Each troll has its own personality and backstory, rooted in Scandinavian folklore, where trolls are often portrayed as mysterious forest dwellers, though Dambo’s versions are more playful guardians than fearsome creatures.

What makes these trolls especially meaningful is their eco-conscious origin. Built entirely from recycled materials, they reflect Dambo’s mission to turn “trash into treasure” while encouraging people to rethink waste and creativity. This traveling exhibit is part of a global series, with trolls popping up in forests and parks around the world, each installation uniquely designed to connect with its environment. At South Coast Botanic Garden, they feel right at home, nestled among native plants, hidden along winding paths, and perfectly integrated into the natural landscape as if they quietly arrived long before any visitors did.

Even without the trolls, the garden itself is a gem worth exploring. Spanning 87 acres, it offers a peaceful escape filled with vibrant blooms, tranquil walking trails, and sweeping coastal views. From colorful rose gardens to serene desert landscapes, every turn feels like a mini adventure in horticulture. Add in the surprise of discovering a towering troll peeking through the trees, and the experience becomes something truly memorable: a perfect blend of art, nature, and a little bit of magic.
